Quirino Stadium, Bantay, Ilocos Sur – With the score of 2-0, the football team Perth Glory of Australia won over the Philippine Azkals in their friendship game in Ilocos Sur on July 26, 2016. The match was hot as the humid atmosphere where the audience are agitated whose team can score a goal first. In the 2nd half of the game, Joe Knowles (Jersey 22) of Perth Glory managed to put the first score inside the opposing team’s goal. At around 10 minutes before the game ends, another goal was shot by Perth Glory Player, Richard Garcia (Jersey 11). “It’s a good game even if it’s a tough condition because the weather and temperature is very humid. We never play hard like this before but as we go on the flow, the game was very good,” Knowles said. The international game was hailed by the football fans for bringing a good fight for the first time in the province. Through the initiative of Governor Ryan Singson and Sports Coordinating Committee, the two football teams were invited to play in the just inaugurated state of the art football field. This is to showcase what the province have got in sports development and to create a genre where little football players will be honed. “We are very thankful for the success of this big event. The Philippine Sports Commission Chairman, Butch Ramirez saw the potential of our football field to be a training venue for sports development activities because of our hosting of this international game. We are looking forward for another match of international teams to be held in our province for the next months,” Gov. Ryan said. The two teams expressed their gratitude to the province for such an experience. They appreciated the atmosphere and the hospitality of Ilocanos. The members of the team Perth Glory even conducted a football clinic for the young players in Ilocos Sur before their friendly game. “We enjoyed our stay here. They (Azkals) did very well, they are competitive and they gave us a very good fight,” Kenneth Lowe, Coach of Perth Glory said. Meanwhile, this big event paves way to the creation of an inter-town football competition in the province of Ilocos Sur just like the Gov. Ryan Singson Basketball Cup as announced by Gov. Ryan after the game.
